Cablemen felicitated for saving 'miracle baby'
LUDHIANA: When Amrit Pal, 26, had stopped his mobike on noticing a child floating in the Sidhwan canal and his companion Viney Kumar Gupta, 21, had dived into the water to save the child, rewards were the last thing on their mind. It was an unselfish act of rare courage, a spontaneous gesture.
Yet, appreciating the inspiring example set by the duo, two little known local NGOs have felicitated the two cablemen.

Active Anti-Corruption Group and Brothers Club are of the opinion that the youngsters have set a fine example and should be rewarded for their exemplary courage.
"We came to know that the administration and the police have not shown any appreciation for the act, at least not formally. So we decided to jointly felicitate the two young men in a public function.
This is the least we could do despite wanting to reward them monetarily," said Ramesh Bangar and Harpal Singh, the NGO presidents. They feel the government, which does not tire of claiming it is waging a war against female infanticide, should have made some gesture to show its appreciation of the brave act of the cablemen.
Recalling the fateful day, Vinay, a school dropout, told TOI that they were on way to attend a complaint when Amrit noticed the baby. She was wrapped in a towel and floating on a small wooden plank. While Amrit stopped the bike, "I jumped into the canal and brought her to safety.
"We did not save her in expectation of any reward," he said. Yet, he expresses his surprise at the appreciation coming from least expected quarters, when "it should have been a government official or a political leader".

However, Amrit is quick to add: "In fact, this is of least concern to us. Given a chance, we will not hesitate to repeat such an act." In the incident, equally appreciative is the contribution of sub-inspector Kuldip Singh - the investigating officer in the case.
He too was felicitated along with the boys. Kuldip Singh spent around Rs 10,000 from his pocket on the treatment of the child at PGI in Chandigarh. He also summoned his off-duty nurse wife for help when the child was brought to the civil hospital here. However, his boss, SSP AS Rai was prompt in appreciating his noble gesture.
